Last month, we delivered 85 copies of Who’s Watching Me? to the Polson 6th grade class.
I walked into that classroom not entirely sure what to expect. Would they care? Would they get it? Would this be just another “tech talk” they’d tune out?
Then, about fifteen minutes in, a student raised their hand:
“So the TikTok algorithm is watching me?”
Yes. And that question—that realization—changed the entire energy in the room.
The Moment of Recognition
That student wasn’t asking about abstract concepts or distant threats. They were asking about right now. About the app they use every day. About the videos they watch, the searches they make, the DMs they send.
And suddenly, the whole class was leaning in.
Because for 11–12-year-olds, digital privacy isn’t theoretical. It’s:
- Why their recommended videos are so accurate
- Why ads follow them around the internet
- Why they see certain content but their friends don’t
- What happens to the photos they post
Watching them connect those dots—watching them realize they have agency over their digital footprint—that’s why I wrote this book.
Why Digital Literacy Can’t Wait
Kids are growing up in a world where their data is currency, their attention is a product, and their online choices have real-world consequences—often before they’re old enough to understand what’s happening.
Kids Need Tools
Not fear. Not lectures. Practical understanding and actionable steps they can implement today.
Parents Need Guidance
A starting point that doesn’t require a tech degree. Clear explanations they can share with their families.
Schools Need Resources
Curriculum-ready content that educators can use without specialized training or extensive prep time.
Who’s Watching Me? isn’t about making kids paranoid. It’s about giving them awareness, agency, and control.
What’s Inside the Book
Who’s Watching Me? is designed as a family guide—written for kids to understand, structured for parents to facilitate, and practical enough for schools to integrate.
Understanding Digital Tracking
How algorithms work, what data is collected, and why companies want your attention
Your Digital Footprint
What you leave behind online, how it follows you, and what you can do about it
Practical Action Steps
Privacy settings, app permissions, safe browsing habits, and red flags to watch for
Family Conversation Guides
Discussion prompts and scenarios to help parents talk about these topics without turning it into a lecture
It’s real. It’s practical. And it’s built for families navigating the digital world together.

One Question. Eighty-Five Students. Infinite Impact.
That moment in the Polson 6th grade classroom reminded me why this work matters. Not because we need to make kids afraid of technology—but because we need to equip them to use it wisely.
Digital literacy isn’t optional anymore. It’s foundational.
And when I saw those 85 students walking out of that classroom—books in hand, questions forming, awareness growing—I knew we’d taken the first step.
“Yes, the TikTok algorithm is watching you. And now you know what to do about it.”
